I recently entered my first cake decorating competition. It was the Cakes for Kids Charity Competition on October 23rd in Dover, MA. All of the registration fees and were donated to the Boston Children's Hospital and the theme of the competition was Bedtime Stories!
And I WON! I won First Place in the professional division and Best in Show!
This is my cake
I decided to include a lot of fairy tales on my cake!
On the top tier is Rapunzel in her tower and Peter Pan in front of the moon.
The next tier down is Cinderella with her pumpkin carriage.
Then there are the 3 Billy Goats Gruff and the troll under the bridge.
The middle tier is Bell and the Beast.
Next is Snow White and the evil witch giving her an apple and the 7 dwarfs coming down the mountain.
On the bottom tier is Hanzel and Gretyl and Little Red Riding Hood.
Climbing up the bean stalk is Jack.
On the Base of the Cake is a Girl in bed reading her book.
Check back in a couple days for more pictures. I have to get them from the camera at work.

Hello Again!
So it's been quite a while since I last posted anything here. Oddly enough I haven't posted anything new since I started working at cake shop. I started working at Amanda Oakleaf Cakes at the end of April! It has been an awesome learning experience these last few months. I keep looking back to the cakes that I was making when I first started working there and I'm just amazed at all the stuff that I have learned since then.
Here are a couple cakes that I made over the last couple months.

This was one of the cakes that I made my first month working at Amanda Oakleaf Cakes.
I painted the celtic cross on the top of this one with food coloring.
This is one of my favorite cakes. I made the unicorn and the girl for this cake. My coworker decorated the rest of the cake.
And this is a display cake that I made for the front of the store. It's decorated the same way we decorate our cakes but it's built on styrofoam instead of cake.
I will add more awesome cake pictures soon. I'm in the middle of moving to a different apartment this week, but once I'm all moved in I will try to update more frequently.

Tangled Cake
So here is my newest creation. I made this for my friends Tangled party earlier today.
I was originally planning on just making cupcakes but then I saw this cake tower from the movie and I wanted to make something like that. I ended up changing a lot and not really following their tutorial that much.
I used cupcakes to make up the tower with a dowel up the center for support. The base is a small round cake and I did use the ice cream cone for the top.
I made Rapunzel's head out of fondant and the rest of the decorations are royal frosting.
Then I made a bunch of cupcakes. Some had painted fondant decorations and the others had frosting with white chocolate flowers on the top. I think including all the baking and decorating it took about 6-7 hours and I had a couple problems with the tower leaning but after a few more skewers it was fine.
This was probably the most fun cake that I have made since my Tim Burton cake back in January!

Flaming Strawberries!
Here is the cake I decided to make for Valentine's Day a while ago.

As soon as I saw Sprinkle Bakes Flaming Strawberries I knew I had to make them, but I made a cake instead of cupcakes.

I layered a chocolate cake and a strawberry cake with strawberry frosting in between. Then I topped it with a chocolate glaze and used more of the strawberry frosting to hold the strawberries in place.

Then I used Bacardi 151 in the strawberries, which worked really well!
It was so much better than candles.

St. Patrick's Day Cupcakes!
I made these with my friend Jeremy for St. Patrick's Day.
So the fondant circles are supposed to be gold coins at the end of the rainbow! They also have Bailey's flavored frosting and some little home made shamrock chocolates.
The colors in these rainbow cupcakes came out really well this time too!
Minty Delicious Chocolate Cake
This is my most recent creation. I made this for my friend Mike's Birthday last Friday.
It is a chocolate mint cake with layers of chocolate pudding in between the cake. Then I covered it with a chocolate glaze and chopped up Andes mints and fondant stars.

I also made more mini cupcakes but I topped them with mint frosting instead of chocolate this time.

Giant Cupcake
So it's been a while since I updated and I have been baking like crazy!
Here is my giant cupcake
And it has babies! I was inspired by Bakerella's Cupcake Bites.
And look! They are all different colors on the inside!
More Rainbows! I have a thing for rainbows, just in case you haven't noticed.
